KARE Breaks™️
Short Term Accommodation & Respite
Everyone needs a break sometimes — a change of scene, a new experience, or simply time for your usual carer to rest. KARE Breaks™️ supports NDIS participants to spend time away from their usual home using their Short Term Accommodation (STA) and respite funding, with the same trusted care they receive every day.

What is KARE Breaks™️ ?
KARE Breaks™️ is our signature group travel and new-experiences service, delivered under the NDIS STA support items. Short Term Accommodation (including respite) is an NDIS support that covers your care while you stay somewhere other than your usual home for a short time. STA is typically funded for up to 14 days at a time, and the amount in your plan depends on what is reasonable and necessary for your situation.
If you have flexible funding in your CORE budget, you may be able to use it for respite even if STA isn’t listed separately in your plan — but this depends on your eligibility. We’re always happy to help you check what your funding allows before you book. You can also read more about STA and respite on the NDIS website.
Your respite, your choice
With KARE Breaks™️, you decide how you’d like to use your respite — a weekend away with your support worker, a group camp, or an an amazing adventure. We plan every break around your preferences, interests and support needs, so each experience is genuinely yours.
A complete, supported package
A KARE Breaks™️ stay can include accommodation, round-the-clock support workers, shared meals and agreed activities — all delivered by staff who are experienced and fully certified. For travel, you’ll be asked to contribute toward costs that aren’t covered by your NDIS funding, such as flights, meals and personal expenses. We’ll always be clear and upfront about what your funding covers and what it doesn’t, before you commit.
Supported travel & new experiences
KARE Breaks™️ is our signature group travel and new-experiences service, delivered under the NDIS STA support items. Choose a destination, and our team takes care of your support throughout the journey — whether it’s an interstate trip or, where your circumstances and NDIS rules allow, further afield. You focus on the experience; we handle the support.
Frequently Asked Questions
STA and Respite Explained
This is a general guide — your own funding depends on your NDIS plan. For the latest, visit ourguidelines.ndis.gov.au.
Is KARE Breaks™️ a NDIS-funded holiday?
No, KARE Breaks™️ is not an NDIS-funded holiday. The NDIS funds the disability supports you need — not the holiday itself — so you cover personal and travel costs like flights, tickets and meals beyond what STA includes. It’s a supported respite model that lets you use your funded supports in a place, and at a time, that suits you.
What is Short Term Accommodation (STA)?
STA gives you and your usual (informal) carers a short, mutually rewarding time apart. You’re supported by someone else — for at least one night — while your family or carers take a break from their caring role. It helps keep your usual support arrangements sustainable.
How many days can I use?
The NDIS generally funds up to 28 days per year, for up to 14 days at a time. You choose how to use it — for example, one block of up to 14 days, or a weekend a month.
What does NDIS STA budget pay for?
Your accommodation, personal care, and the support you need to take part in community, social or cultural activities. If you need overnight support, it can also cover a support worker’s accommodation so they can stay with you.
What does STA not pay for?
STA is not for holidays. It won’t cover airfares, tourist travel, cruises or tours, overseas or holiday accommodation, your meals, or the cost of activities themselves (like entry fees or tickets). You can still use STA funding for the support you need to join an activity — just not the activity’s cost.
Where can I stay?
You can stay our respite centres, our partner hotels or short-stay rentals, or your own home. It’s generally within your home state or territory (with some exceptions for remote or border areas). STA Funding cannot be used on cruises.
Do I pay for my own meals and outings?
Yes. Meals and activity costs are everyday living costs you cover yourself. NDIS funding pays for the disability support you need, not the food or the activity.
Who is STA suitable for?
STA must relate to your disability support needs. Generally, you live with (or get daily drop-in support from) your primary informal carers for more than 6 hours a day, long-term — plus at least one factor like high-intensity support needs, complex behaviour support, or carers whose capacity to keep supporting you is at risk.
How do I get STA in my plan?
Talk to your support coordinator, who can raise it at your check-in meeting, or request a plan change. STA is included as flexible funding in your Core budget.
What about transport?
You can’t use STA funding for transport if you can travel independently. If your plan has separate transport funding, you can use that to get to and from your stay.
